Project Highlight

Home Power Backup System with 10kW Inventer

Overview

In this project review, we focus on a home power backup system designed to provide reliable energy storage and seamless automatic transmission between utility (Escom) and solar power sources. The system under review includes a 10kW inverter and two 8.7kWh lithium-ion batteries, ensuring continuous power supply during outages and optimal energy utilization.

System Components

  • Inverter:
    • Capacity: 10kW
    • Function: Converts DC power from solar panels and batteries to AC power for home use.
  • Batteries:
    • Type: Lithium-ion
    • Capacity: 2 x 8.7kWh (Total 17.4kWh)
    • Function: Stores excess solar energy for use during non-sunny periods or power outages.
  • Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS):
    • Function: Automatically switches the power source from the inverter to Escom (utility power) in case of inverter failure, ensuring uninterrupted power supply.

System Functionality

Normal Operation

During normal operation, the system prioritizes solar energy to power the home and charge the batteries. The inverter converts the DC power generated by solar panels into AC power, which is used to run household appliances. Excess solar energy is stored in the lithium-ion batteries.

Backup Operation

In the event of a power outage or when solar energy is insufficient (e.g., during nighttime or cloudy days), the system seamlessly switches to battery power. The stored energy in the lithium-ion batteries provides backup power to the home, maintaining continuity in power supply.

Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)

If the inverter fails, the ATS comes into play. The ATS automatically transfers the load from the inverter to the Escom grid. This automatic transfer ensures that there is no disruption in the power supply, providing peace of mind to the homeowners.

Implementation

The homeowners reported significant savings on their electricity bills and praised the system’s reliability and efficiency. This case exemplifies how modern energy storage and management systems can enhance energy security and sustainability for residential applications.

Conclusion

This project highlights the effectiveness of integrating a 10kW inverter, 17.4kWh lithium-ion battery storage, and an automatic transfer switch to create a robust home power backup system. By leveraging solar energy and ensuring seamless power transmission, the system provides a reliable, efficient, and eco-friendly solution to modern energy needs.

System Benefits

  • Reliability: The combination of solar power, battery storage, and automatic transfer to utility power ensures continuous power supply.
  • Energy Efficiency: Utilizes solar energy effectively, reducing dependence on the grid and lowering electricity bills.
  • Seamless Operation: The ATS provides an automatic and smooth transition between power sources, minimizing downtime and inconvenience.
  • Environmental Impact: Reduces carbon footprint by relying on renewable solar energy and efficient lithium-ion batteries.
